More horror and seriousness in Atlantis: “Aquaman 2” and spin-off “The Trench”

“Aquaman” is the DCEU’s biggest hit to date. Nevertheless, director James Wan wants to adopt a slightly different tone in the sequel and in a spin-off. An “Aquaman” series project is going in the opposite direction.

With “Aquaman”, which is now on Netflix and is watched diligently there, James Wan still relied heavily on relaxed entertainment, and did not stop at self-irony and kitsch. In the future, however, something is likely to change in the universe of the man who can talk to Pisces. Because two of the “Aquaman” follow-up projects currently in production are likely to be more serious. A third project, however, goes in exactly the opposite direction.

“Aquaman 2”: Relevant for our world

On the one hand, there is the inevitable sequel to a mega-success like “Aquaman” (worldwide grossing: 1.148 billion dollars): “Aquaman 2”!

A few weeks ago, James Wan, known for a long time primarily for horror films such as “Saw”, “Insidious” or “Conjuring”, announced that he would add more of his beloved horror elements to “Aquaman 2”.

“Aquaman 2”: Director James Wan wants more horror in the sequel

At the DC Fan Dome event, at which a lot of information about many future DC adaptations was recently announced, James Wan spoke again about his sequel. In the entertaining “Aquaman” panel he reminisced with Orm actor Patrick Wilson mainly about the first film, but also got some information about part 2. The most important statement:

“I would say the sequel will be a little more serious and a little more relevant to the world we live in today!”

“I would say the sequel will be a little more serious and a little more relevant to the world we live in today!”

After actor Wilson, who joined the project at Wan’s instigation and will be back in the sequel, declared that he wanted to see more different worlds in the sequel, Wan also revealed that there will definitely be numerous new locations.

Despite more horror, seriousness and relevance, we can of course expect plenty of humor and one or the other self-deprecating moment in “Aquaman 2”.

“Aquaman 2” is due to hit theaters in December 2022.

Real horror in “Aquaman: The Trench”

There was also a little horror in “Aquaman” – when the title hero, played by Jason Momoa, and his colleague Mera (Amber Heard) are attacked by amphibious monsters, the Trench.

Based on this sequence, there should also be a real horror film in the “Aquaman” universe:

“Aquaman: The Trench” will focus on the underwater kingdom in which human-like creatures have developed into amphibious underwater monsters over the centuries.

However, the film project has been a little quieter recently, so it is not yet possible to predict when this film will be released. By the way, James Wan is only supposed to act as a producer.

“Aquaman: King Of Atlantis”: series for children

While James Wan is remembering his horror roots with these two films, he is also working on a third “Aquaman” project. He will also produce the mini-series “Aquaman: King Of Atlantis” for the US streaming service HBO Max.

This differs significantly from “Aquaman 2” and “The Trench” – and not just because it will be animated MOVIE 4k. The series should be aimed primarily at children and therefore be more fun. Here we experience how Arthur Curry aka Aquaman has just become King of Atlantis. The problems start on his first day …

“Aquaman”: The current Netflix hit

“Aquaman” has been running on Netflix for a few days and is apparently very popular. At the time this article was published, the DC comic adaptation was even number 1 in Netflix’s Germany Top 10, with which the streaming service ranks what it claims to be currently the most watched content.
