Must-have or no-go These new editions of Das Ding and The Jaws are something different

Must-have or no-go? These new editions of “Das Ding” and “The Jaws” are something different!

Distributors have to become more and more creative in order to persuade people to buy physical media even today. This is also shown by a new line of Steelbooks from Universal, in which classics appear with Japanese artwork.

Streaming is not only having an increasing effect on the cinema, but also on the home theater experience. The development away from physical data carriers and towards digital film enjoyment has been going on for several years, but is currently being accelerated again by Corona. Distributors who want to continue selling their slices (especially of “old ham”) have to be more and more creative.

The enormous success of isolated VHS editions (Blu-ray releases in the style of video cassettes) on films from the past, or at least on films that were set in the VHS era, even led to the fact that brand new productions such as “John Wick” * ( !) get a retro treatment. And what Universal is just starting could soon trigger a similar trend including a “chain reaction” – provided that these things sell well:

Old content repackaged

For fans of unusual images and motifs (or just the Japanese language) that stand out from the well-known covers, there is certainly a certain incentive to buy. After all, Japan in particular is known for its often rather wacky and unusual posters, which are usually not used for home theater releases in this country, but are quite exotic and therefore also something special (example: “Duel”). In other cases, only the Japanese title lettering differs from the local publication (example: “Jaws”).

Anyone who hopes for upgrades in terms of content in addition to the stylish packaging will be disappointed. It should be about so-called repacks – i 123movieshd.e. a new release of the well-known discs (via Bluray-Disc.de). “Duell” and “Das Ding” contain the already available Blu-rays, while “Jaws”, which has already been released in 4K, also has a 4K disc on board.

Once indexed sci-fi masterpiece with Arnold Schwarzenegger appears as a noble new edition – uncut
